The National Institute of Health Doutor Ricardo Jorge will host, on May 14, the 13th edition of the National Symposium “Promotion of Healthy, Safe and Sustainable Food”, on the theme “Food Additives in Portugal: from Monitoring to the Protection of Public Health. A collaborative strategy”.

The 2026 edition of SPA_3S is dedicated to the theme “Monitoring the Intake of Food Additives in Portugal: A Collaborative Strategy”. The event aims to present the most recent data on the intake of food additives among the school population aged 11 to 17 years in mainland Portugal, and to reinforce the importance of their systematic monitoring.

In this way, it seeks to contribute to the protection of public health and to consumer confidence, as well as to raise awareness of other activities related to this topic. The session will include speakers from institutions involved in the use of food additives, in the food industry and distribution sector, as well as in regulatory processes and safety assessment related to their use. INSA will present the methodology used to assess the intake of food additives by the population under study, the challenges faced, and the results of the monitoring carried out up to 2025. Monitoring the intake of food additives allows for continuous assessment of population exposure to these substances. The organization of this seminar reflects an ongoing commitment to transparency and the dissemination of scientific culture, with the ultimate goals of increasing food literacy and promoting public health.
